Thermal burns are difficult to treat traditionally, and hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBO) can be used as part of the treatment regimen to significantly reduce healing time and improve outcomes. Since burns have been shown to have low oxygen levels within them, only hyperbaric oxygen can significantly increase these levels again. HBOT promotes oxygen diffusion into tissue, decreasing the number of inflammatory cells, influencing the efficiency of new blood vessel growth, reducing edema, and ensuring there is adequate oxygen in microcirculation. It may speed up epithelialization and suppress unnecessary inflammation that could negatively affect normal wound healing.
