An intracranial, or brain abscess is a collection of pus, immune cells, and other material in the brain. Usually it is caused by a bacterial or fungal infection. It is one of the most serious conditions of the central nervous system. The encapsulated area of pus is potentially life-threatening and also difficult to treat as many patients do not survive the traditional treatment. In addition to traditional treatment, HBOT treatment for this condition is FDA-approved and can be highly effective. During HBOT treatment, the area of the abscess is flooded with 100% oxygen at increased pressure. The increased oxygen prevents the continuous infection and spreading of the bacteria or virus. HBOT also works to reduce the swelling associated with the abscesses as well as to boost the body’s immune system to fight the infection.
